Ana Kim (b. 1995, South Korea) is an individual artist working in painting using all kinds of mediums. She was educated in South Korea until her middle school and moved to America by herself from her high school. She attended high school in Michigan and New York, and further received her BFA from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is now working as an artist in two cities- Seoul and Chicago.

Ana call herself as an artist who creates new genre and translation through unrealistic rearrangement of animals and nature, and her practice is pursuing surrealism with the theme of co-existence. Completing her education in three different states in America as Korean, she was inspired by the fact that America is harmonized with people from all different background, and how she adopted herself in America as non-american. These led her to make co-existence and harmony through her works. Her subjects of painting are animals and nature. By using animals and nature, she creates the different atmosphere from the outside world by arranging elements together, which is not supposed to be together. She wants to go beyond the notions of life, natures, and everything by breaking the habitats and trying to open up her and her audiences’ view. Creating new harmony, that is her way of communicating with art and challenging herself against notions.

Also, Ana is working on breaking the ordinary notion of using the painting mediums. While maintaining traditional way of painting by brush, Ana utilizes all sorts of resources by working with unfinished edge including un-stretched canvas and non-canvas settings, using oils, acrylics, and colors. This led her to understand and further her imagination and interpretation of her own theme. She hopes that her audience to approach her paintings with unlimited definitions, and her paintings give her audiences as much as pleasure as she has received while painting.
